Please flag up any good movies being screened that you spot on the message board - if there's interest I'll try to organise it!

London has some great venues for classical music - the Royal Festival Hall being my own favourite. The music is its own reward but it is also great to meet some like-minded people before a concert, and/or after, for a drink and a chat. The format is simple - show up in a corner of the bar from 30 minutes before and immediately after the event, lubricated as you feel appropriate. Find your kindred spirits and interact. If we ever require a recognition signal in a crowded place, then displaying th …

Although called Caversham Critics, this book group is open to all friendly Reading based fiction lovers. We shall explore old and modern classics, contemporary fiction, and perhaps even pretend to be judges by comparing our notes on the shortlists for the big literary prizes. We meet monthly in a pub in central Reading. We are a friendly bunch and we generally stick around for some post-book banter and a few drinks too. So don't be shy: if the club sounds like your cup of tea, don't hesitate, jo …
For those who love "early" music; starting from 16th century renaissance music up to about the baroque music of the 18th century. Hopefully, we'll find some concerts using original instruments - so you can experience sackbuts, hurdy gurdys, viola di gambas, serpents and other extraordinary things. This group is also for those who know nothing about this type of music but who would like to explore "new" music - you might even get hooked on the wonders of polyphony and false relations (nothing to …

So in your twenties you've done all those pub crawls and waded through 99 million people to get to bar. All evening you've shouted to the people next to you just to ask them their name and what they do for a living, you go home with ringing ears and then you get to a realization and now... you'd rather discover Picasso or go to a quiet restaurant or listen to some jazz or classical music and talk to the person opposite you. If so, this is the group for you. The idea is to find a peaceful place t …

For those with a passion for the past. Events, music, movies, in fact just about anything and everything from the 1920s to 1950s, to be held at venues in the Richmond Upon Thames area. You're interested in the social and cultural history of the 20s, 30s and 40s? so are we, and so are many of us. You collected bubblegum cards? so did I, and so did so many of us. Your parents or grandparents tell great stories of the night they first met at a dance at the Savoy (or wherever)? so do mine. You lov …
It is sadly with great regret that I must pass on the not-so-great news that at the end of this month, the Classical Game Shop is to close, permanently. While I cannot go into detail as to why this course of action must take place, it is safe to say that when online sales strip the shop sales on such a regular basis, the case for having a bricks-and-mortar store quickly becomes difficult to maintain. While I am disappointed the shop must close, it really is the gaming groups that are wheat made …
Cult Film London is a group devoted to the lost classics, the so bad they're good and the plain odd. We'll be going to see films old and new and enjoying some of the odder cinematic moments. I’m open to suggestions so if there is a film you’re dying to see let me know and I’ll try and put something together!
Ok here's the idea... A book group but for films! Every week we meet and choose a film to watch sometime in the next 7 days. We each then go away and watch it in our own time before meeting up the following week to discuss it (and life in general) over a few drinks. As this is a brand new group any suggestions for locations welcomed. The idea is we will pick films by consensus but will have to see what works best. Personally I like a wide range of cinema but interested in Art-house world cinem …

This group is different. Unlike most other film meetup groups, the focus of this one is less on Hollywood / major film studio blockbusters and more on intelligent, thought-provoking, alternative cinema - i.e. contemporary and classic world cinema, arthouse, documentaries, independent ('low budget') and short films. Featured screenings (and post-film discussions) take place at a variety of cinemas/venues in and around London. If there is demand, there will also be the opportunity to attend other …

A Five-Unit Course on Theories of Consciousness What is consciousness? Why do we have it? What’s it for? This course is an attempt to survey the ways in which people have tried to answer these questions. It’s a journey through the most prominent theories of consciousness. The course won’t tell you what consciousness is, but it will (hopefully) give you a well-developed awareness of the theories and issues thrown up by the struggles of many, varied theories to answer this and related questions. The London Literary Salon draws on the Salon tradition of a regular meeting of a committed group of people for the exchange and exploration of ideas. The London Literary Salon (and its Paris counterpart) use the study of a great work of literature as a springboard to consider the wonder of the human experience–in all its raw and dynamic forms. The discussion resembles a seminar style study, but the emphasis is on what each participant brings to the conversation. The works of Joyce and Shakespear …
